Travel Insurance Claims on Koh Samui: How It Actually Works

A step-by-step guide to claiming medical treatment on your travel insurance in Koh Samui — direct billing, the paperwork you need, and the scooter clause to watch.

Travel Insurance Claims on Koh Samui: How It Actually Works

Getting ill or hurt abroad is stressful enough without a fight over the bill. The good news: claiming on travel insurance is straightforward once you know the order of operations. We work with most major insurers every week, so here is the process, start to finish.

Do you even need travel insurance here?

It is not legally required for tourists in Thailand, but we strongly recommend a policy with proper medical cover. Private treatment — and especially emergency surgery or medical evacuation — can get expensive fast. Before you travel, check your policy covers medical expenses and hospitalisation, emergency evacuation and repatriation, a 24-hour assistance line, and any pre-existing conditions that apply to you.

The insurers we work with

We are recognised by and deal regularly with Air Doctor, Collinson, Best Service Group, Post Office Insurance, Dr Walter and Balt Assistance, among others. If your provider is not on that list, message us anyway — we work with insurers worldwide and will do our best to accommodate your claim.

Step by step: making a claim

  • 1. If you can, call your insurer’s emergency assistance line before treatment — especially for anything non-urgent.
  • 2. Come to the clinic with your insurance card and policy number.
  • 3. Tell reception you have travel insurance and which provider, so we can prepare the documentation.
  • 4. Get treated. Our doctors provide complete medical records, diagnosis codes and receipts.
  • 5. Depending on your provider, we either direct-bill them or you pay upfront and claim it back.
  • 6. You leave with everything you need: medical report, itemised receipt, doctor’s letter and any test results.

Direct billing vs. pay-and-claim

Direct billing — where the clinic settles with your insurer and you pay nothing upfront — is available with some providers, not all. It is worth a quick message to us before your appointment to check whether yours is set up for it. If not, you pay on the day and claim the money back with the paperwork we give you; we can even email documents after you have flown home for a delayed claim.

The scooter clause almost everyone misses

This one catches people out constantly: many travel policies exclude scooter and motorbike accidents unless you held a valid motorcycle licence and were wearing a helmet. Read that section before you rent. Whatever your cover, we will treat you regardless of insurance status and give you full documentation for the claim — but knowing the rule beforehand saves a nasty surprise.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do you offer direct billing? With some providers — contact us before your appointment to confirm.
  • What if I can’t pay upfront? Talk to us; we understand costs can be unexpected and will do our best to help.
  • Can you send documents after I leave Thailand? Yes — email info@samuihomeclinic.com with your details and what the claim needs.
  • What documents do I get? Itemised receipt, doctor’s notes and diagnosis, an English medical report, plus lab and X-ray results.
Read the scooter clause before you rent the scooter — not from a clinic bed afterwards.Samui Home Clinic
